     A RARE JEWEL

You were a dark beauty
a mother goddess, no less
tho’ you wore no wings
nor diaphanous dress

Jewel, you were so named
so fitting and so pure
your love shone for others
your hands they did nurture

Into my life you appeared
when a babe-in-arms I held
a lost child myself
out-running the citadel

Bird Life In The You Yangs  *Painting acrylic on canvas*

***(This painting has been sold)

*************************************

You Yangs…

Yellow, blue, eucalypts

ancient river red gums,

centuries in the making; naked branches,

petrified arms, gnarled and grey

beckoning, pleading, monster-like

awaiting more fire to sprout new life

darkened cavities like gaping mouths,

homes for many a creature.

***

Seems a graveyard for once-thriving

river red gums, companion granite rock

cracked and sentry-like, guarding;

fossilized years of earthly rumblings

groaning low Wadawurrung mountains

weathered skeletons hovering, creaking

trunks given up on survival?

Crashed to earth, limbs flailing

***

so dry, roots no longer gripping

many moons of rainless clouds

tortured, pitiful, writhing gums; so

much crumbling charcoal clinging;

kindling amassing for a future

conflagration that one day must come

alas what wildlife lurks beneath?

Koala cling high amongst the thinning gums.

***

Myriad birds thrive in this strange landscape

in harmony and yet, noisy squabbling,

from long shared and distant pasts;

Magpies’ melodious carolling,

New Holland honey eaters chattering

colourful feathers fleetingly observed

camouflaged in the skyward flowering gums,

laughing Kookaburra and croaking Wattlebird.

***

Silence unobserved atop granite peaks in the midst of a sweeping lava plain.

ROME’S LOST INNOCENTS

The Holy Roman Empire, now in a small city resides

where Papa Pontiff from his balcony

preaches to the faithful, words of a  prophet

‘suffer the little children to come unto me’

**********

Pray give us their blackened souls

to salve them with  baptism and prayer

we’ll rescue and save them for god’s heaven

make sure every one of them gets there

Bcharré And Her King of Trees

Goodbye Bcharré

Poem and Painting  Goodbye Bcharré

Painting 500cm x 410cm  Acrylic on canvas

******************************

There we stood above Bcharré the land of our fathers

in the shadow of a magnificent tree of kings, scarred and riven

beyond which stretched the Qadesha Valley deep below

beckoning, engulfing all with its lonely mists of woe

***

Long have blood thirsty invaders stormed poor Lebanon

fortifications  of rocky cliffs and great King  Cedrus Libani

his powerful roots hidden in caves and rocky outcrops

once protected animal and peasant alike, for millennia

***

Phoenicians and Romans, to name warriors but a few

decimated Lebanon’s cedars for agile fighters’ garrisons

mighty, heavenly temples,  fleets of foreboding ships

their planks they withstood thousands of salty tides

I saw you, a darkened sea

your waters alive and shimmering

yes you, Murray Darling and your

snaking and meandering along

gathering around a billabong

his brow deeply furrowed

sitting down by the

his gaze too intense

with trepidation I asked

if he needed my help

without altering his

A ribbon of lushness

meanders here and there

dark green of banks

water pure and spare

Ancient river red gums

exquisite to my eye

sun drenched ivory limbs

twisting low and high

Oh you majestic beauties

rising up before stooping

your dark eucalypt leaves

long to caress, drooping

Under blue cloudless skies

your full canopy lures

not just myriad birds

all manner of creatures

Songs permeate the air

some strident, some sweet

wings flapping, beaks snapping

still, a peaceful retreat

Softly splashing, happy ducks

heads bobbing to and fro

complete a picture so divine

only Nature could make it so

TOWARD THE CROSS THEY WALK

*****

Toward the cross they walk

children of the damned

tell me, whatever did they do?

They were born, that is all!

Their mothers were unwed

Oh! shame  Oh! horror

quickly, hide them away

work them to the bone

Pictures of Virgin Mary

paragon of motherly virtue

displayed on workhouse walls

reminders to the decadent

Beautiful Italy

her fertility on show

vineyards, olive groves

virgins galore

not only fruits

ripe for the picking

every womb

a-waiting a seed

those pretty girls

in terracotta villas

knew their day would come

every womb forced to bear

Dedicated to my great grandmothers: Annunziata Giustina Fabbrucci Frandi and Raffaela Marisi Mansi Greco (Grego)

During research into my Italian family tree I met Italian genealogists and historians who believed that the two great Italian mass migrations were mistakes that  left Italy the poorer.
