Dedicated to my grandchildren, Amber and Jack, who inspire me to join them in the most fantastical dramas*

THE BUTLER AND THE NANNY

Not far away, in a pretty town, ‘twas uncanny

Lived the Butler of some repute, and the Nanny

She who could cook up many a tasty feast

Her pastry, pies, and rice dishes not the least

*****

The Butler, as always he answered a knock

In his best bow tie, his head he would cock

“Coffee, tea or milk” he’d ask those who came to visit

“Come, take a seat, here at table” he’d politely insist

*****

Miss Amber and Master Jack often came by to play

Ready to paint or to sketch, they’d spend mostly a day

As well Master Jack liked to sing, drama was his want

While Miss Amber was a dancer, her love,  en pointe

*****

Clever Little Miss and astute Little Master,

Always knew the Butler could avert disaster

And when his index finger was raised above

They both knew it was time to listen, and behave

*****

The Butler and the Nanny loved birds in their garden

If Zak the cat stalked them, he’d not get a pardon

*****

Birds large and small searching for grubs to eat

Zak was only allowed to watch from the window seat

*****

That Little Miss she’d scold Zak if birds he chased

To kill such beautiful creatures would be such a waste

******

While Little Master instructs Zak “give mice a chance”

They’ll freeze or shiver when Zak takes a glance

*****

Dressing up in costumes and acting out stories galore

Was drama Master Jack, Miss Amber, loved to explore

*****

Of course, she always wanted to be a royal queen

He preferred to fight monsters in nearly every scene

*****

Such a musical family, they love dancing and singing

With mummy on piano and daddy guitar-a-strumming

*****

Master Jack dreams one day he’ll join the family band

But for now he and Miss Amber join in, hand in hand

*****

At night when daddy, mummy finally arrive at the door

The Butler serves a snack, to their delight and more

So tired and weary after several hard-working weeks

Just to sit down, relax, and is all every grown up seeks

TOWARD THE CROSS THEY WALK

*****

Toward the cross they walk

children of the damned

tell me, whatever did they do?

They were born, that is all!

Their mothers were unwed

Oh! shame  Oh! horror

quickly, hide them away

work them to the bone

Pictures of Virgin Mary

paragon of motherly virtue

displayed on workhouse walls

reminders to the decadent

Oh Lucca

why do you hide your beauty?

no…

you’re not a Milan

a Rome

or even a Florence

but greens from every palette

adorn your hills and valleys

freshness pervades your air

water pure as crystal

What’s that I hear?

Lucida Mansi

her palazzo there

in Lucca town

filled with silken gold

treasured paintings

four poster draped exquisitely

how can that compare?

Lucida of my maternal line

was it you enticed me here?

SAVE HATE FOR HATRED ITSELF  Copyright To Anne Frandi-Coory

Hate is such an adaptable word

It clings to any person, object or thing

Free to roost anywhere like a bird

Attaching itself to a whim or a prayer

No matter what race, gender, creed

No matter that we all began in one place

The slightest taunt can plant a seed

To kill, maim, torture or subjugate

Yonder in a field of wild flowers
reaching out for light and air
once blackened and wasted bowers
now have life blood a-rising a-new

Generations through bleakest gloom
spread overhead and far beyond
dormant buds a-waiting to bloom
when the sun god bows his head

Granddad, oh how could you leave
before I had time to question?
A child I was too young to grieve;
where have you been, what have you done?

Oh yes, your diary I have read
how you travelled and how you learned.
But there’s so very much left unsaid
from your own lips I long to hear

Along countless streets you have walked
in this fair country and in that.
To many people you have talked
alas, not to the woman I’ve become.

Across vast oceans you have sailed
such a brave soul to take on such.
Through hardships and illness you’ve prevailed
and gave me life through your son

So many if onlys I have in mind
of what we could have discussed.
I’m so sure, granddad, we’re of a kind
kindred spirits still in touch

A bright future you handed down to us
leaving Lebanon’s snowy mountains
where cedars hug like green cumulus
your little village nestled safely within.

Fat grapes clinging to their vine
olive trees abundantly grow there.
For that fertile crescent did you pine
and the family you left behind.

I see you walking across the bridge of time
and I imagine we’re holding hands
what a journey that would have been
sharing together, life’s shifting sands

Reach For The Stars, Little Girl Reach for the stars, little girl Don’t ever settle for anything less Chubby face ‘neath a cheeky curl Saucer eyes everywhere glancing Sweet Amber, you have a beauty so rare Like a jewel that warms and delights As well with a squeal, a smile or a tear You bring happiness wherever you go From a plump little infant you will grow Into a svelte teen, so pretty, so sassy Out of pinks, frills, ribbon and bow To worldly wise; a rose set to bloom Like a refreshing breath of cool sea air On a blue sky’d hot summer’s day You’ll blow away stuffiness lurking there In any winter heart or mind downcast Smiling dimples astride cherub bow lips Oh how they’ll tease, tempt with a pout Many a suitor; he’ll enthral with his quips Romantic and clever to steal your heart A goddess armed with feminine guile Should never be underestimated tho’; You’ll whisper soft words to calm, inspire But within those veins fiery passion flows A beautiful mindset, determination not to lose No mere glass ceiling could ever impede Your climb to the top of whatever you choose So go ahead and reach for the stars, little girl © To Anne Frandi-Coory 2 Jan 2013 - All Rights Reserved
